Challenges Matched to the Bugs Around You

Each month’s challenges focus on insects children are likely to encounter during that season and in familiar outdoor habitats.

Follow the seasons

Bugs change with the seasons, and so do our challenges.

  • Spring brings out caterpillars, water striders, and garden snails.
  • Summer glows with fireflies, dragonflies, and buzzing bees.
  • Fall is alive with writing spiders, stink bugs, and grasshoppers.
  • Winter highlights tough survivors like carpet beetles and houseflies.

Designed for Your Region

  • Insect activity varies across the country. Bug Badges considers regional differences when selecting challenges, helping each month feel relevant and achievable.
  • Families can search in backyards, gardens, neighborhood green spaces, parks, and nature trails without needing to travel somewhere special.

FAQ - Badges & Challenges

How does my child earn the badges?

Three badges arrive in a sealed envelope inside every monthly kit.

Families can decide how to use them. You can give your child each badge after completing the matching challenge, or let your child enjoy them immediately.

What if my child cannot find one of the bugs?

That is completely fine. Bug hunting is about observation and exploration, not perfect completion. In fact, not finding a bug can be a valuable opportunity to practice perseverance, patience, and problem-solving as your child keeps looking, tries different locations, and learns that discovery sometimes takes multiple attempts.

How many Bug Badges are there?

There are currently 36 Bug Badges, enough for a full year of challenges. We are actively expanding our collection (we'd love to hear any new insect suggestions!)

What should I do with my completed Challenge Cards?

Keep them as a nature journal, place them in a binder, display favorite drawings, or review them at the end of the year to see everything your child discovered.

FAQ - Subscription Management

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Monthly subscribers can pause, skip a shipment, or cancel through their account at any time, and prepaid plans will remain active through the end of the term already purchased.

Can I gift a subscription?

Yes. Bug Badges subscriptions and gift cards make great gifts for young nature lovers, homeschoolers, aspiring scientists, and children who enjoy collecting.

Will my subscription renew automatically?

Yes, all plans renew automatically unless you cancel. We’ll send a reminder before your renewal date.

Save with 3-month and annual plans

You can subscribe month-to-month or choose prepaid plans (3-month or 12-month) at a discount.

FAQ - Miscellaneous

When will my first kit arrive?

Typically 2-7 business days

Can children catch or collect the bugs?

Catching insects is not encouraged. Bug Badges encourages respectful observation without harming or removing insects from their habitats.

Children can watch, photograph, draw, or write about what they discover.

Can homeschoolers use this for science credit?

Yes. Bug Badges works well for homeschool science, nature study, outdoor education, observation practice, drawing, journaling, and enrichment activities.

Parents can expand each challenge with books, research, photography, or additional nature journaling.

What ages is Bug Badges designed for?

Bug Badges is designed primarily for children ages 4 - 15.

Younger children may need help reading the cards or recording observations, while older children can research the insects and document their findings more independently.
